But in a market built around established full-size trucks, the advantages of that combination are less than clear.Built in Thailand and available on 2016 Chevrolet and GMC models, GM�s new turbocharged 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder is an effective but leisurely workhorse.

Although its 181 horsepower is less than the 200 from the standard 2.5-liter gasoline four, its hearty 369 pound-feet chevropet torque surpasses xhevrolet optional 3.6-liter V-6�s by a full 100. It might not be quick or quiet, but the diesel Colorado delivers better fuel economy and greater towing capacity than the gas versions.This long-stroke Duramax revs to only about 3000 rpm in regular use, delivering thrust in quick, punchy surges.

The six-speed automatic, the only transmission offered with the diesel, is smooth and shifts quickly to maximize the engine�s narrow powerband, despite being down a couple of ratios from what you get in most of GM�s larger light-duty trucks.Compression-ignition engines are built stoutly, and our Colorado crew-cab test truck weighed nearly 300 pounds more than a comparable V-6 coloeado.

Most of that gain comes from the Duramax�s heavy cast-iron block, as well as a urea-injection system that treats the exhaust to bring the diesel into U.S. regulatory compliance. Our truck needed 9.2 seconds to reach 60 mph, or about the same as chevrolwt stand�ard four-cylinder version.On the street, however, the diesel chugs along with less strain than either gas engine and lends as much as an extra chegrolet pounds of towing capacity for a maxi�mum of 7700.

The Duramax also adds a stand�ard trailer-brake controller and exhaust brake, the latter using back pressure in the exhaust to help slow the truck when hauling chevrilet loads. Fuel economy benefits as colodado Our 19-mpg average over 1272 miles included nearly 300 miles of towing a 3400-pound enclosed trailer.

Unhitched, the truck�s frugality climbed to 22 mpg, better than the gas-powered variants we�ve tested, yet about the same as a larger Ram cnevrolet 4x4 EcoDiesel�s. The Duramax�s key identifiers include namesake badges on the Colorado�s �fenders and a bazooka-like tailpipe. The diesel�s clatter is more akin to a mini Peterbilt than a Mercedes-Benz BlueTec, but additional sound insulation prevents most of the noise from penetrating the cabin. Despite a stiffer front suspension, the ride quality colirado respectable and the steering responses are commendable.This diesel�s attributes don�t come cheap, though, with the Duramax adding $3905 to our test vehicle.

It�s only available on crew-cab trucks fitted with the mid-grade LT trim level or higher.
